Brief Description:  Vertical Power - VP-200 Electrical System

Here are a couple of pictures of the new fully integrated electrical system for the RV-8 by Vertical Power called the "VP-200". This system replaces all fuses, circuit breakers, and most switches in the electrical system. All of the switching is handled by the "Red Box" which takes the 60amp feed from the alternator/battery directly. There are "modes" of operation detected by inputs from the RPM, GPS, engine monitor, etc. Based on the current "mode", the correct electrical systems components are turned on or off. For example, in Take-Off Mode and Landing-Mode, the Boost Pump should be ON, but in Cruse-Mode it should be OFF. This is handled automatically by the VP-200. No pilot intervention whatsoever. If its dark out, the position lights are turned on. If you're in Landing Mode, the Landing Lights are turned on. You basically program the box with all of the devices you have and what state you want then in each given mode of flight. The status of any device can be manually turned ON or OFF through the Display Interface, over-riding the currently selected mode of flight. There is a "Duo" version of the system that adds a second "Red Box" giving extra power outputs and some level of redundancy. At this point, I've opted for just the single system.

The system has a complete wiring harness including all of the wiring needed for a typical aircraft application so installation of the Electrical System is mostly just placing the wires and hooking them up to the various components. Very slick system over all and should make the Electrical aspects of construction very simple.
