The unfortunate happened with the Garmin SL-30 NAV/COM this week. During the installation, I decided to power it up and make sure that everything was making good contact with the sliding tray and connector modification. As luck would have it, I managed to hook the power and ground backwards! Funny thing is, after that, the SL-30 wouldn't turn on anymore... Go figure. Here's the cool part - turns out Garmin has a flat repair fee on the order of $800-$1000 depending on the unit. Gulp.
So, that didn't sound too appealing, and since the "warrantee void of seal broken" sticker was already broken because of the sliding action into the tray, I popped the top off the unit to have a look inside. Turns out the "COM" section and the "NAV" section have two different power sources and each have their own "protection". On the NAV side, there is a tiny - I mean TINY - little 3A fuse in a fuse holder. That would be easy to replace. On the COM side, however, they opted for a small resistor-sized fuse that is - get this - soldered in! After some research and surfing around the Digikey web site, I located both fuses and ordered them. Installation was straightforward and didn't take too long. I cleaned the soldered in surface to remove any trace of the fact that the fuse had been replaced.
The Digikey part numbers are:
* NAV 1/4 watt 7A LittelFuse: F2318-ND (MFG # 0251007.MXL)
* COM Surface/Holder mount 3A SloBlo LittelFuse: F2604CT-ND (MFG # 0452003.MRL)
Finally, slipping the unit back into the tray and applying power - IN THE CORRECT POLARITY THIS TIME - revealed a once again a perfectly working unit! Cool, just saved $800!
