Brief Description:  Taxi Tests & Magnetometer Calibration - Part 01

Mr RV-8 got the brakes checked out and a couple of runs up and down the taxiway this weekend! The compass rose is at the West end of the field and I needed to calibrate the two electronic magnetometers so we taxied down and got some pictures while we were at it! The first magnetometer calibrated on the first try. The second one, however, wouldn't even start for some reason. We taxied back to the hangar and pulled the empennage fairing off and unscrewed the two magnetometers and poked at the cables and used a VOM to buzz them out. Next all three of the EFIS's came out of the instrument panel but we still couldn't find anything wrong with the wiring. Finally, I realized that I had wired the system up such that you have to calibrate Magnetometer #1 from the Center EFIS, and Magnetometer #1 from the Left EFIS! After that, and a taxi back out to the compass rose, Magnetometer #2 calibrated without a problem.

On the second taxi back, I gave her a little down stick and eased up the power to about 2000 RPM and the tail popped up real nice! It was really easy to control and I didn't have any problem keeping the nose straight. Wow! What an experience! The test flight should be no problem.

I've got a ton of HD video of the event both from the cockpit view as well as from the chase-car. I'll get the videos mixed down in the next few days and get them posted to my YouTube channel, http://www.youtube.com/user/MattsRV8.

Thanks to Craig for all the help Saturday!!
