Brief Description:  Avionics & AHRS Leveling Brackets - Part 01

Well, I thought I was going to get started on the wiring next, but then while I was mounting the instrument panel I remembered that I needed to install the AHRS and avionics leveling brackets on the aft side of the second bulkhead. These brackets support the back of the instrument panel as well as provide a nice, level platform for the AHRS unit (the roundy topped golden box in the pictures). The AHRS measures the attitude of the airplane in all three dimensions and has to be exactly level and plumb with respect to the aircraft's axises. I had some brackets from the old fuselage that I was able to drill out the rivets and reuse, but unfortunately, on the new fuselage, I made the access holes under the Red VP-200 control box too close to the outside edges and there wasn't enough flange to mount all of the rivets.

So, I designed some shim extender plates that riveted to the old brackets and extended the reach out another half inch or so, enough to get a full row of rivets installed. While this wasn't that complicated of a task, all-in-all, it was a giant PITA. The rivet holes, previously 3/32" where too large now from being drilled out a couple of times so I had to up size them to 1/8" rivets which presents other issues in an area with limited access and minimal material thickness.
