Brief Description:  Building An Audio/Video Panel - Part 01

On Ruby 1.0, I had a little 1/8" stereo jack installed near the passenger's right shoulder. This output was from the aircraft's stereo intercom and provided a mix of all the various audio outputs; basically exactly what was being heard in the pilot's headphones. This included the intercom, Nav/Com, entertainment selection (music, movie, etc), as well as the various audio warning's from the three EFIS's and the Vertical Power. The notion was that I could take this output and run it to an in-cockpit camera or audio recorder. In practice, it actually worked very well. I had to build a little level converter and then was able to put the audio directly into the line-level input on the video camera. On the various YouTube videos of the RV-8 Taxi Tests and ultimate Test Flight saga, all of the audio including the background music is coming from this vary output! The only problem I found with it was that it really didn't make that solid of a connection. In fact, during one part of the Test Flight video, the left channel completely dropped out for a while then eventually came back. I mixed the right channel over onto the left during video editing for this portion, so it isn't really that noticeable.

But, nothing says "amateur video" like crappy audio, so I decided that Ruby 2.0 was not going to have these issues. Additionally, I wanted an easy way to pipe the video from the camera onto the Kenwood display which would make it a lot easier to know if I'd turned the camera on, if it was actually recording, and if it was pointed in the right direction. I also wanted to be able to add inputs for both audio and video that would allow me to connect any sort of external media source up and watch and listen on the Kenwood including both the pilot's instrument panel mounted screen 7" LCD screen as well as the passenger's headrest mounted 7" LCD screen.
