Brief Description:  A/V Panel 2.0 & Connector Wiring - Part 01

I've agonized the good part of a week on this audio/video panel. Version 1.0 was nice, but I just didn't like the fact that I wasn't going to be able to remove the connectors once the wires were soldered in place. Additionally, my buddy Tim made me crazy by pointing out that the connector layout should have all of the Inputs on the left and all of the Outputs on the right. He, of course, was right. So it was back to the CAD to re-layout the silkscreening. Since I was messing with it anyway, I decided to try a few different font sizes and layouts and wasted way too much time on it, only to realize that my original concept - the one that matches the rest of the labeling in the airplane - was really the right answer. Such is the decision process it seems on the project. But, the extra time invested in doing it "right" and not just "doing it" has served me well throughout this endeavor. The new layout matches the rest of the labeling on the various controls and right-hand console and looks pretty simple and elegant, IMHO.

I also found some interesting pass-though female RCA-to-RCA bulkhead connectors at the local Radio Shack and decided that these would give me the installation flexibility I was craving. I also found some nice black, male RCA connectors with simple black wiring at the 'Shack and opted to cut these off about 4" back from the connector, and then splice them onto the four coax A/V wirings coming from the front. I used a generous amount of black heat shrink and the whole things totally looks custom professional. A strategic slit in the baggage area carpet and the bundle of connectors dressed nicely into the back of the Version 2.0 connector panel. I wish they made black heat shrink labels with white lettering for my labeler, but the black on white doesn't look bad.

The whole thing tucks neatly behind the passenger's right elbow and seems like it will be extremely handy in the future for capturing those air-to-air videos with cockpit sound or jacking in an iPod to play a video.
