Brief Description:  Magnetometer Installation - Part 01

Yahoo! Finally some reportable progress on the RV-8 rebuild! I've been spending a lot of time over the last few months on fuselage and avionics wiring and have been holding off on any log entries until all the wiring is complete. But, today, I had to mount the Magnetometer (electronic compass modules) in the tail section, and that required some re-engineering and turned out so nice that I thought a nice little log entry of it's own would be appropriate.

On Ruby 1.0, I mounted the Magnetometer in the open area under the vertical fin and between the left and right horizontal stabilizers. This proved to be a very good spot and fairly free of stray magnetic interference. But the one thing I didn't like about the first installation was the unservicability of the components once the fin was installed. I would have also preferred that they be mounted a little higher to give a bit more open view of the sky.

Today, I decided to give the mounting design a good long contemplation and I'm happy to report that the new technique is a lot more serviceable and about 1" higher that the previous design. Additionally, with the new mounting plates and the wider stance for the vertical mounting columns, I am able to use traditional plastic DB9 connector housing and screws on the connectors which is a major win on aesthetics. All of the components used in building the monolith are made out of either aluminum, or stainless steel, nether of which impact the magnetic field. The wires dressed very nicely around the inside of the area and should be easy to service in the future simply by removing the fiberglass fairing between the vertical and horizontal stabilizers.
