Brief Description:  Canopy Side Skirt Initial Fitting - Part 01

Next up is the fitting and installation of the fiberglass canopy side skirts. Frankly, it's pretty amazing that these preformed skirts fit as well as they do, I suppose, but nonetheless, the initial fitting process is a rather frustrating process. On the initial left skirt, I carefully followed the plans and cut the virgin skirt down to 1/4" larger than the score line on the panel. Well, um, that turned out to be about 1/2" too SHORT in the area right behind the passenger. The screws were literally exposed for a length of about 6-8 inches. Back on the web to order a replacement for $260 + $15 crating + $100 in shipping. Yeah, I know. So the replacement came today and I decided to take a new tack on this initial fitting. This time I only cut away just enough of the skirt to fit up close against the canopy in the rear where it sweeps clear around the back. I left the rest of the skirt full length which is quite a bit bigger than necessary - in most places. In that fateful area in the back where the screws were expose on the previous attempt, there is just a few ticks of extra length with the new skirt! Whew, glad I didn't cut that down. So the rest of the basic fitting went pretty well. Getting the left skirt to fit in the back and middle wasn't too much work, but getting the front fitted such that I could drill the hole for the latch handle was a bit of a challenge. Once again, in this canopy project, there isn't really one true "right" way to figure out where the skirt should go to be in the right place for drilling the hole.
