Brief Description: Riveting GPS Antenna Box To Firewall - Part 01
On Ruby 1.0, I made a custom box that mounts to the engine side of the firewall under the fiberglass cowling and holds the five GPS antennas. This worked great and so I decided to reuse it on Ruby 2.0. For some reason, the riveting of it to the firewall with the 3/32 rivets just didn't go well the second time, though. At the time, I just decided to put it aside for a while. Today I dug out the parts and gave it another go. This time, I fabbed up a .063" stiffener plate to mount to the cabin side of the firewall. I countersunk the stiffener for 1/8" AN426 flush rivets and then Cleco'd the whole thing together. Riveting the 1/8" flush rivets given the odd access was a bit of a challenge, but I'm happy to report it came out nearly perfect this time! Yahoo! The flush heads are on the cabin side, which is a bit backward from the normal firewall riveting, but is nice because all those rivet heads will disappear when the interior gets painted, unlike the R1.0 where I had the shop heads on the cabin side.
