Brief Description:  Mounting Bracket For AHRS - Part 1

The dual-redundant Altitude-Heading Reference System (AHRS) box that drives the artificial horizon and other heads up displays must be mounted perfectly level with respect to the flight of the aircraft. It also needs to be relatively close to the GRT HX displays since the cables are kind of short. Since the instrument panel is tilted forward about 10 degrees, this presented a mounting problem. Additionally, since the actual vertical position of the instrument panel is dependant on the top skin being in place, it presented additional challenges in finding a way to mount the AHRS such that it would be level and that could be adjusted. After a fair amount of consideration and two tries, I came up with the bracket system shown in the photos. It is attached to the back of the instrument panel both with rivets and with the mounting screws for the center GRT HX display. It is attached to the second bulkhead with a bracket. The system allows the mounting surface of the AHRS to be adjusted both fore/aft and left/right by adjusting the relationship of the flanges. Once a position is determined, all of the flanges will be riveted together. With the top skin riveted in place, it should provide a substantial mount for AHRS. Small washers can be added after the fact to make slight adjustments if necessary. By the way, adding the 8 lightening holes in the bracket removed well over 2 ounces of dead weight!
