Brief Description:  Front Stick Installation & Wiring - Part 1

The installation of the front stick grip was similar to that of the rear with the exception of the fact that there was no tube spacer to use as a pattern for drilling the mounting holes in the stick tube. That meant that some additional careful planning was required to get the stick height and grip twist angle just right. Everything came out pretty good on the first try, remarkably. I would have to say that I would have preferred about 1 degree less counter-clockwise twist in the stick grip, but I'll get used to the way it is. There's really no way to adjust it now, short of getting a whole new stick assembly and drilling new holes. Chances are just as good it would be off by 1 degree in the opposite direction the on the second try. Oh, did I mention its only off by 1 degree... Sheeze.

Anyway, the wiring came out nice and I fitted a pair of DB25 connectors in line with the cable so that the stick could be removed for working under the panel as necessary. The cable tension is very acceptable throughout the full travel of the stick with minimal bending and movement primarily a twisting action.

I was able to run the two giant blue cable up through the right gear tower and popped them out near where the rest of the cables come and go. When I ordered the stick grips, I had to specify how long I wanted the blue cables. I though, oh, 6 feet would be plenty, so let's go with 9 feet just to be safe. Well, turns out for the back stick I was about 1.5 feet short at the 9 feet estimation! I think it will work out fine since all of the rear stick outputs have to be combined with the front stick outputs and the plan at this point is two just splice them right there at the end of the shorter rear cable. There is just enough of the front cable to snake up to the VP-200 Control Unit and terminate on the DB37 connector.

All-in-all, the installation of the stick grips came out nearly perfect and there are hardly any scratches in the grips despite all of the handling required for installation.
