Brief Description:  New Metal Instrument Panel Arrives

The new Metal instrument panel arrived on Monday 3/30/2009. Unfortunately, the hole for the VP-200 DU was cut wrong. Trial fit the panel and it mostly fit pretty well. Made a number of updates to the CAD drawing, creating Version 1.4.3 and emailed it to Nick Burns for review. I'm going to have them cut a new metal panel. $288 for the second try on the Metal including material and rear boss machining. Reasonable.

The second picture highlights the machined boss on the rear of the panel. The VP-200 DU will fit into this from behind and make its face flush with the front of the panel. The VP-200 DU has a .063" flange to match the standard .063" thick instrument panel typical on the RV series of planes. The problem is that I went with a .125" thick panel because there are so many large holes in my panel that there isn't much material left for support. This means that the flange on the VP-200 DU doesn't fit up flush with the front of the panel like its suppose to. To solve the problem, I just had them mill out .073" from the back, which should make the VP-200 DU poke through just perfectly after power coating.
