Brief Description:  Instrument Panel Final Wiring - Part 2

I have to say, it really feels good to have this part of the construction complete! What a lot of wires and connections. I sure hope I did everything right... Or worse yet, want to add something a little later...!

Speaking of adding something, I ordered an Ameri-King AK-451 ELT which includes all three of the emergency frequencies including 121.5 (no longer monitored by satellites, btw), 243MHz (military monitored), and the newer 406Mhz satellite frequency. I also added the "GPS" option which includes an RS232 input for GPS Lon/Lat position data from the aircraft's GPS. The ELT will not only, then, transmit the distress signal, but also the last Lon/Lat position given by the aircraft's GPS receiver just prior to the ELT being activated. This allows rescuers to pin-point the exact locate of the aircraft to about 66 feet! Without the GPS input, the location accuracy is about 1 to 2 miles. In rugged terrain, that could mean the difference between being found and not being found. You also register your aircraft N-number with NOAA and the FAA when you install the ELT and then program it with your aircraft information. If the ELT is triggered, the rescue team already knows who exactly they are looking for. Starting this Summer I believe, Canada will require that all aircraft have the new 406Mhz ELTs. This is significant to me as I plan to do some flying in Canada at some point. The US FAA is not requiring the 406Mhz ELTs at this point, and says that the traditional 121.5Mhz units are still acceptable. The catch is that the 121.5Mhz is no longer monitored by satellite, so detection of the signal is a lot less likely.
