Brief Description:  Instrument Panel Wiring Complete! - Part 1

And with the installation of the #2 metal instrument panel and the satellite antennas, I officially declare the instrument panel wiring complete! Yahoo! About the only thing left is the wiring of the GPS RS232 data signal to the ELT receiver when it arrives. I have the cable already stubbed out and installation should be a snap.

Making all of the connections to the instruments using the DB connections wasn't too hard - with the top skin removed! I'm getting a little worried about how hard this is going to be once that skin is riveted into place. On the RV-4, the whole area behind the instrument panel is covered by a skin that is SCREWED on so maintenance is simple. On the RV-8, because the windscreen is fixed, and faired into the top skin, there's no way to make the top skin removable. That's why the instrument panel is screwed in. The problem seems to be all of the cables! I'm pretty sure that I'll be able to lay on my back and reach up under the panel and disconnect all of the cables. Also, most of the instruments are individually removable and their respective cables are long enough to pull them out 6 to 8 inches facilitating access to the connectors. The large holes for the GRT HX displays, also gives good access to the rest of the cabling behind the panel once they are removed, so maybe it won't be as bad as I think...

Anyway, it feels like quite a milestone to have the instrument panel wiring completed. Additionally, most of the other wiring is stubbed out already like the engine transducers, and lighting in the wings. It will involve mostly just adding a connector to the ends of the remaining wires which should go quickly.
