Brief Description:  Oxygen System - Pulse Demand Unit Install - Part 1

An airplane friend of mine with a Lancair Legacy convinced me recently that a plane such as the RV-8 that can climb 2500 to 3200 fpm with an IO-390 engine should probably have an oxygen system. Cruse efficiency is substantially better at high altitudes, but it gets hard to breath much above 10,000 feet without supplemental oxygen. He suggested I check out Mountain High Oxygen ( http://www.mhoxygen.com/ ) up in Oregon as they have a complete line of aviation-based oxygen systems.

Their web site is a veritable smorgasbord of oxygen related paraphernalia. I configured a system with a 22 cu ft tank, an electronic valve, an electronic pressure transducer, and the EDS O2D2 Pulse Demand System. I have interfaced the electronic pressure transducer to the GRT EFIS already and will cover that in a subsequent log entry. The 22 cu ft tank coupled with the EDS O2D2 should provide about 16 hours of oxygen for two people at 15,000ft which should be more than adequate.

The first component to get mounted is the EDS O2D2 Pulse Demand System. The O2D2 is a very nice design and uses the inhale pressure from nose to momentarily turn on a burst of oxygen from the system. It kind of feels like a really faint puff of air. The beauty of this system is that it uses far less oxygen than traditional delivery systems that simply flow oxygen all the time.

The one down side to the O2D2 is that its meant to be a "portable" system and not panel mounted in anyway. My intention was to mount it along the right side of the cabin opposite the rear throttle quadrant. The problem was that there were no mounting ears or faceplate to speak of that could be considered a mounting solution.
