Brief Description:  Upper Gear Fairings - Part 1

Builld HOBBS Meter: 1568 Hours

I decided that since this was probably the last time the wings would be on the plane before I took it out to the hanger later this year sometime, I had better install the upper landing gear fairings since their alignment depended on the wing and wing fairings. In reality, I probably could have done them without the wings on as they really didn't come into contact with the wing fairings, but it was good to see how everything lined up anyway.

Van's would have you fabricate these fairings from *scratch* using oil-based modeling clay and forming the fairing with your artistic sculpturing abilities. Then, you are suppose to make *from-scratch* fiberglass lay ups over the modeling clay and then remove the fairings and sand them to fit. Does that sound like an insane amount of work to you? Yeah, well, it did to me too. But the thing that worried me more than the sheer amount of work was the fact that the likelihood of me being able to actually fabricate a *matching* set of these fairings was next to impossible. At least not on the first at least, or probably even on the second try...

I surfed the Internet looking for "RV Fairings" and happened upon Fairings Etc ( http://www.fairings-etc.com ), where they custom-make gear fairings for all the various RV planes. I ordered a set, and when they arrived, I couldn't believe how nice they were and how well they fit right out of the box!! Save yourself the aggravation and just order a set. You won't regret it!
