Brief Description:  Rear Top Cowling Hinge Installation - Part 1

The RV cowlings are attached to the firewall using piano hinges with slightly undersized pins. The pins are slide in and out of the hinges to allow the cowling to be removed from the aircraft for servicing. The system actually works very well and best of all, yields a very clean exterior installation profile. The first of these hinges to be installed is for the rear of the top cowling. The hinges are first bent to the contour of the top of the firewall and then slipped into place between the top skin and the firewall. The same holes used for riveting the skin to the firewall are used to attach the hinge. A .032" 2024-T2 shim is needed here on the cowling to keep the top of the fiberglass cowling flush with the top of the skin. I opted to increase the width of this shim by about 2x to give a bit more reenforcement to the cowling in this area.
