Brief Description:  First Carpet Arrives - Rear Baggage Area - Part 1

Much to my excitement, the first sample of the carpet arrived. This was for the rear baggage area. Given the extreme differences in thickness and "bendability" between the paper doll patterns I made in the CAD and this carpet, the fit was pretty amazing. That being said, there were a few issues that I can't overlook. The first issue seems to stem from the thickness of the carpet. In my discussions with the upholstery shop, I was under the impression that the first article was going to be made from the "Bentley" style carpet which has a thinner, more flexible pile. The baggage area carpet I received, however, turned out to be cut from some "Essex" they had. The Essex has about a 30% thicker pile on it and its backing is probably about 30% heavier/thicker as well. I think that most of the fitting issues would be non-issues at this point if it had been made with the Bentley carpet. That being said, there are a couple of things that need "adjusting" as far as the pattern is concerned. The most significant probably is the fact that I had planned that the side pieces would form tightly over the fuselage side angle longerons. With the thicker carpet and the Velcro backing, there's just no way the carpet will form the necessary bend around the angle longeron. That means that the side pieces in the front about about .75"-1" too long at the bottom and this can be seen in the pictures. The other issue is that with the Velcro backing, the "under-tabs" are just too stiff to fold under very well.
