Brief Description:  Wiring The Righthand Console - Part 01

The Righthand Console has a number of functions in my RV-8. It has a set of toggle switches that allow me to bypass the VP-200 electronically controlled electrical system in an emergency and switch certain critical systems directly to the battery though secondary circuit breakers including the Primary EFIS/AHRS/GPS, the Radio and Intercom, Primary Electronic Engine Ignition, EIS-4000 Engine Monitor, and the Cabin Oxygen Controller system. Additionally, there are switches for enabling/disabling the various buttons on the rear control stick grip, switching to the external GPS data input, and a Servo Autopilot Kill switch. Also located in the console is the Stereo Intercom, Panel and Cabin Dimmer controls, External GPS DB9 data jack, and a 12V power port that can be used to power a cell phone, iPad, or other device as well as change the airplane's battery if necessary (this is in addition to the standard Ground Power Unit jack in the rear baggage compartment that can be used to jump start and/or charge the airplane.) Additionally, the front and rear headphone jacks are terminated on the Intercom as well as obtain their power and ground.

So all of that adds up to a LOT of wires that need to be terminated here in this small space. There are a number of coaxial audio cables that need to terminate on the Intercom and each one had to be dressed individually, pulling the coax braid out to an external wire that could be properly terminated. That was a lot of work all by itself.
