Brief Description:  Duckworks 50w HID Landing Light - Part 1

The Landing Light installation went very smoothly. I'm using a HID (High Intensity Discharge Xenon) landing light kit from Duckworks up in Oregon. Duckworks is owned by Don Wentz, a fellow RV builder I've know since the early 90's. Don makes an exceptionally nice kit and installation took about three evenings. The only thing I had trouble with was when I cleaned the Sharpie Pen marks off the Plexiglass with some Lacquer Thinner which caused the lens to crack around the edges and to turn a kind of milky color. I've used Lacquer Thinner to clean Plexiglass for years and I'm not sure what caused the problem this time. In any case, it was kind of a bummer since the lens cutout came out pretty nice and I had to basically toss it. Fortunately, I had a second HID kit that I'm going to install in the other wing for a Taxi light, so I had an extra Plexiglass lens to finish up the right wing installation.

The installation of the kit involves cutting a hole in your nice, pristine wing leading edge. I used a Dremel cutoff wheel and then a Dremel mini-ScotchBrite wheel to clean up and smooth the edges of the cutout. It took a fair amount of time and patience, but the cutout turned out perfect.

Next is filing and fabbing up the mount which is pretty straightforward. I mounted the HID power supply to the back of the mount and tied up the wires with a couple of wire ties.
