Brief Description:  Left Aileron Hinge Install & Mounting - Part 1

Mounting the ailerons wasn't too difficult. The ailerons had to be drilled to accept the steel hinges. This went pretty quickly. There are a couple of little bushing you have to make out of 3/8" aluminium tubing. I discovered a sweet way of making this exactly the right length out of the gate by simply marking them accurately, then using a tube cutter. Just a quick hit with a file was all that was required to bring the part in to compliance. This procedure is in contrast to how I made them on the RV-4 where I cut them on the band saw, then pains takingly filed them down to the right size. The weird part is that I had a tube cutter back then. Why I didn't use it for this purpose escapes me.

Mounting the aileron to the wing is kind of a trick because you have to hold the surface up to the wing, align the holes and then with a third hand try to feed the bolt through the holes. Oh, and on the inboard hinge, also add just the right complement of washers and spaces to get it all to align correctly.

Hooking up the push rod was probably the most challenging part of this whole task. The nut is completely hidden from view while you're trying to feed the it on to the bolt. The thing that worries me about this arrangement is the long-term serviceability. Since you can't really see if the nut is on, you can't really check it during pre-flight. Ultimately, I found that if I unscrewed the push rod fitting from the end and then flipped the aileron up, I could get better access to the bolt and nut. The downside to this procedure is that you have to disconnect the push rod at the bell crank end. I guess its the lesser of the evils, but still, a pain.
