Brief Description:  Fuel Tank Attach Brackets - Part 1

The RV-8's fuel tanks are integral to the leading edge of the wing and take up the first 4 1/2 rib bays and hold a total of 21 gallons of fuel per tank. Structurally, the fuel tanks are attached to the wing spar using huge pile of #8 screws such that the tanks can be removed from the aircraft for servicing if necessary, without having to remove the whole wing. Pretty handy.

The fuel tanks also attach to the fuselage through a large, set of angle brackets. On the Quickbuild kit, the bracket attached to the fuel tank is already fabricated and riveted to the tank. However, the bracket attached to the fuselage isn't. They just give you a big hunk of U-channel aluminum and a 3-D drawing and say "Make a left and right one". Ah, yeah, right...

So, the first one I made had a little incident with the skill saw and was completely destroyed early on. I was frankly lucky that I didn't get a finger or hand caught; it was kind of scary. Actually broke the fence on the saw.

The second try came out perfect, but I mis-drilled when I was attaching it to the fuselage, so I had to toss it too. Back on Van's web site to order some more U-Channel...
