Brief Description:  Aileron Control Stop Installation - Part 1

Builld HOBBS Meter: 1563 Hours

The biggest dilemma on the installation was on how to actually hold the control stop in place such that it was properly aligned with the aileron hinge, and would stop the aileron at exactly the right amount of throw. Its kind of a crap shoot, that's for sure. I fabricated the little stops out of 1"x1"x.125" 6061 and gave it some more thought. I came up with the idea of simply folding a piece of painters tape back on itself making a double-back tape of sorts, then sticking one side to the hinge in the right position. I could then push the aileron up into the desired, "full-throw" position, and then stick my pinky finger up inside and push hard on the control stop so that it would stick to the wing hinge side better than the aileron hinge side. Presto! Perfectly aligned! Amazing, really. I moved the aileron out of the way, then added another piece of tape over the top of the control stop, then used a right-angle drill to drill the rear hole. I then cleco'd the control stop in that single hole. I moved the aileron back into the full up position and contacted the control stop, pushing hard on it. The centered the control stop and aileron hinge then contacted perfectly. I swung the aileron out of the way and drilled the remaining hole. When all was said and done, I had exactly 31.2 degrees of UP travel on both ailerons using my sticky tape procedure - precisely the right amount. Now, from the control stick, I get solid control throw all the way to the end and feel a positive "clunk" when I hit the stops. Very nice.
