Brief Description:  Rear LCD Screen & Cam Mounting - Part 1

I've been agonizing over how and where to mount the rear passenger LCD screen. Originally I wanted to mount it in the pilot's head rest, but then it turned out that the mount was too big to fit into the size of the head rest. After discussions with the guys at the upholstery shop, I contemplated making a positive mold out of wood that was about 10% larger and having them make a bigger plastic shell set using their vacuum forming system. But that seemed like a lot of work and the head rest is already kind of big. Next I considered mounting the LCD on a top-hinging mount on the back of the pilot's seat just above the stick grip. This seemed like a good idea except that in practice, the passenger would have to swing the LCD screen quite a ways out at the bottom to be able to actually see it. Moreover, having to look down in a bouncing around airplane probably isn't the best idea and significant resources would probably have to be expended in purchase barf bags. So, this weekend, I put all the parts out on the work bench and took a good hard look at what I had to work with.

Looking at the LCD, I noticed that the case screwed together from the back with four screws. I took them out and found that all of the "guts" were located on the front part, and the back part was simply a piece of plastic. I also noticed that the outside dimensions of just the screen, sans the mount, just barely fit on the back plastic head rest shell! After some careful marking and planning, I cut out a mounting hole in the rear shell, and then a similar hole sans the mounting tabs on the inner shell. The LCD basically sandwiches the rear shell piece using the original LCD assembly screws. Sweet!

I also had just enough room at the top of the head rest to mount the little 1"x1"x1" rear-view camera. The camera angle gives a perfect view of the passenger and whether their about to barf, as well as an excellent view out the back of the plane. Should be great for formation flying!
