Brief Description:  Rear Throttle Quadrant with Prop Control - Part 1

I know that I've described certain aspects of this RV-8 construction in the past and related that I had "agonized" over exactly how to do this or that. Well, all of those other times have paled in comparison to the consternation I've had over how and where to mount the rear throttle quadrant. No matter how I looked at it, it just didn't seem like there was going to be enough space to mount it in the side of the fuselage. Van's has a "rear throttle" kit, but it only supports a single level for the throttle and, in my opinion, is a bit on the hokey side when compared with the look and feel of the triple-level quadrant typically used on the front. So, that meant I basically had to start from scratch and design a custom mounting system for the matching two-lever quadrant I had purchased. Tonight I decided to give the whole thing a go and hoped for the best.

I had originally purchased the 2-lever quadrant from Van's that has the flat labeled top surface. I noticed a few days ago that there was also a round-y topped version of the same throttle quadrant. "Hum," I thought, "this one seems like it might be easier to mount. Well, turns out, it wasn't exactly "easier", but it does present far less critical alignment issues when trying to exactly mark, cut, and file the opening in the side rail. I took my time and gave every step a good deal of thought, and I'm happy to report that the installation, in my opinion, came out *perfect*. The hole matches up to the round-y part just perfectly and the controls are easy to access and move, and they don't stick into the cabin area all that far. Yahoo!!
